Bells and Whistles

Miss Booker told us to come sit at the front of the room. She gave Mr. Wolf her chair. He looked funny when he sat down, like a giant in a baby seat.

Jay and Sully sat next to him, facing us. Jay bit his lip and cracked his knuckles. He looked scared. Or maybe excited. I couldn’t tell. Mr. Wolf cleared his throat. He pulled out a whistle that was tucked in his shirt. Then he pulled a hat out of his bag and put it on his head. It said COACH.

“Does everyone like to play games?” he asked us.

I nodded. Some people said “Yes.” One boy said “No.” Mom would say he was trying to be difficult.

Mr. Wolf pointed at me. “What kind of games do you like to play?”

I sat up straight and put on my serious face. “Soccer is my favorite,” I said.

Tommy poked Krisney in the side. They both laughed. Miss Booker shot them a look.
